Is Using Hair Gel Really Bad? Everything You Need to Know!

Hair gel has been used for many years to create the desired look and hold everything in place. But is it actually good for your hair?

In this blog, I thought of laying it point by point for you guys to understand everything you need to know about this popular product!

Chemicals To Look Out For In Hair Gel

Hair gel contains chemicals that can potentially be harmful to your hair and contribute to the cause of hair loss. If you want to maintain healthy, shiny hair then you may want to avoid the following chemicals and opt for a more natural solution:

  1. Propylene Glycol – When added to hair products, propylene glycol works by preventing water and moisture from escaping the hair strands. It’s also responsible for giving hair a glossy and sleek appearance.
Harmful Effects It irritates the scalp and leaves the hair dehydrated causing dryness & frizziness of hair
  1. Polyethylene Glycol (PEG)Polyethylene glycol is commonly used as emollients (softeners) and emulsifiers (aids in the mixing of oil and water-based products).
Harmful Effects – This chemical penetrates the hair shaft and actually strips it of its moisture, leaving the hair dry, dull, and lifeless and they also have carcinogenic properties. One alarming impurity found in PEGs is the highly toxic, ethylene oxide. Even in small amounts, this ingredient is extremely harmful (it was used as nerve gas in World War I). Ethylene oxide is also recognized by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IRAC) as a known human carcinogen.
  1. Formaldehyde – This chemical is added to act as a preservative. Formaldehyde-releasers were first put into cosmetics to keep them from spoiling and causing bacterial or fungal infections and to prolong their shelf life.

Harmful Effects – Tests reveal that it is absorbed through the skin making it itchy and has carcinogenic properties.

So what to do? We also have common concerns around using hair gel on a daily basis, which are hair loss, hair thinning, early greying and even dandruff!

Super Smelly has crafted an entire range of hairstyling cum nourishing products that leave no guesswork for you! These are some of the hero ingredients the brand chooses to use instead of the toxic gunk you just read about! Read on…

  1. Gum Acacia – It is a natural gum consisting of the hardened sap of two species of the acacia tree, Acacia senegal and Vachellia seyal. We use it as the thickening agent in our hair gels.
  1. Glyceryl Caprylate & Glyceryl Undecylenate – Instead of adding harmful PGEs, we use plant based compounds like Glyceryl Caprylate and Glyceryl Undecylenate to act as a hair conditioner and emollient respectively.
  1. Sodium Benzoate – We steer clear of nasty preservatives that do more harm than good! Sodium Benzoate again is plant-based.
  1. The hair gels contain the goodness of natural ingredients which are considered to be super foods for hair in the true sense of the term!
